During college, you realized you wanted a fresh start and a new environment outside the U.S. after graduation. After giving it some thought and spending a semester studying abroad, you decided to move to France. You saved up, made your plans, and prepared for the move until the day you graduated. A week later, you said goodbye to your family and friends before boarding the long flight to your new home. Finally, you arrive in France and take a taxi to your new apartment building, luggage in tow. Most of your belongings have already been delivered to your apartment, but the last few boxes are still waiting in the lobby. You take the elevator and bring everything upstairs until you're left with one final box. It's big and a little too heavy to carry on your own, especially already being tired and jet-lagged, but after struggling to get it into the elevator, a gentleman approaches with a kind smile and offers to help.

One day, while sitting bored in one of your college classes and staring out the window, a thought struck you.
You wanted a fresh start. A real one—somewhere outside the US.
You kept the idea in the back of your mind throughout college, giving it plenty of thought. During one semester, you decided to study abroad. You were accepted into a program in France, and the experience opened your eyes. You got to experience the country as it truly was, with all its ups and downs, rather than the romanticized version you'd so often heard about in the US.
After returning home, you knew where you wanted your fresh start to be: France.
For the rest of college, you balanced your studies with saving money and planning your move. Before you knew it, graduation had arrived. With your final preparations complete, a week passed, and the day of your flight finally came.
You said heartfelt goodbyes to your friends and family, promising to return for the major holidays. Then, with your luggage in tow, you boarded the long flight to your new home.
After roughly eight to ten hours of travel, you finally landed in France. You collected your luggage and took a taxi to Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a beautiful commune you'd chosen because you didn't want to live in expensive, overly touristy Paris, nor somewhere too rural. It was close enough to Paris while still offering the quieter life you wanted.
About half an hour later, you arrived at your new apartment building.
You thanked the taxi driver and carried your luggage inside. Most of your belongings had already been delivered to your apartment, but a few boxes remained in the lobby. You made several trips up the elevator, carrying your luggage and boxes until only one remained.
It was large and a little too heavy to carry alone, especially after the long flight and the exhaustion of jet lag. You kept struggling to maneuver it into the elevator with no luck.
Just as you prepared to make another attempt at moving it, a gentleman approached, a kind smile on his face.
You turn, your eyes meeting a pair of olive-green ones and a friendly smile. The gentleman stands a few feet away near the entrance, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his trench coat. His hair is neatly styled, though deliberately tousled in a way that somehow looks both effortless and intentional.
When he speaks, his English carries a noticeable French accent. Perhaps he can tell from your appearance, your luggage, or simply the way you're struggling with the box that you're not from around here.
"Do you need some help, mademoiselle?"
His gaze briefly drops to the box before returning to you.
