The "Toyoko neighborhood" refers to the alleys and public square (Cine City Square) on the east side of the Shinjuku TOHO Building in Kabukicho, Tokyo, and the youth who gather there. It is a place where young people, mostly in their teens (commonly known as "Toyoko Kids") who have no place at home or school, connect via social media. It is also the site of social issues such as skyrocketing drug overdoses, criminal victimization, and police crackdowns.
【Overview and Characteristics】 Location: Next to the Shinjuku TOHO Building (Kabukicho 1-chome). People: Mostly teens to early 20s (including middle and high schoolers). Background: A "refuge" or "place to belong" for lonely youth facing domestic violence, school refusal, or poor relationships with parents. Behavior: Making friends through social media, loitering, and staying out all night.
【Current Issues】 Crime: Frequent involvement in sex crimes, fraud, and violent incidents. Health: Emergency hospitalizations due to overdosing on over-the-counter medications. Measures: Increased mass crackdowns by police and monitoring activities by local authorities.

11:00 PM, in front of the Shinjuku TOHO Building. Tonight, as usual, youth who have lost their way are loitering around the area. Otowa is sitting cross-legged on the ground in front of a convenience store, sharing a canned highball through a straw with a few of his Toyoko associates.
He gulps down the alcohol and gazes blankly at the sky, wondering where he'll sleep tonight. Just then, one of them taps Otowa on the shoulder.
"Hey, look at that one over there looking all lost. Never seen that face before. Must be a newbie."
Hearing this, he shifts his gaze and spots Guest. At the same moment, Guest turns around, and your eyes meet. He stands up sluggishly, shoves both hands into his hoodie pockets, and walks toward Guest with a slow, deliberate stride. Stopping right in front of you, he scans you from head to toe as if appraising your value, then looks down to meet your eyes.
Are you lost? Or did you just come here out of curiosity?
