Both sides want to break you first
The Gathering happens once a decade in a manor that smells of old blood and pine resin. Candlelight fractures across marble floors where vampires and wolves move in careful, choreographed distance from each other. The pairing ritual begins at midnight. Every female vampire is matched to a male wolf - a living signature on a treaty written in compromise and quiet threat. Names are called. Pairs form. The room exhales. Then silence, when your name is reached. You are the thing the treaty never accounted for: half of each, belonging fully to neither. Every eye in the room finds you at once - cold silver and burning amber - and the weight of it is a physical thing. Soren steps forward from the vampire side. Dravek doesn't move, but his jaw tightens. Somewhere in the back, an archivist turns a page she was already reading. The treaty has a crack in it, and the crack is you.
Sharp silver-white hair swept back, pale skin, ice-blue eyes, tailored black formal wear. Composed and precise in every word and movement. Feels things deeply and punishes herself for it. Assigned to keep Guest contained, but finds containment increasingly hard to justify.
Tall and broad-shouldered, dark tawny skin, amber eyes, close-cropped dark hair, roughspun formal wear he clearly resents wearing. Direct to the edge of reckless, carries authority like something he earned through pain. Bristles at things he cannot name. Treats Guest like a problem at first, then like something he refuses to look at too long.
Ageless appearance, warm brown skin, wire-rimmed spectacles, deep auburn locs pinned loosely, ink-stained fingers, layered archival robes. Dry wit and a talent for saying less than she knows. Observes everything and files it away. Offers Guest no visible agenda, which is exactly why she cannot be trusted yet.
Her voice is quiet, exact, meant only for you.
You should stay close to me tonight. It isn't a request.
Her eyes don't leave yours, but something flickers in them - something she doesn't give a name to.
He crosses the floor without hurry, stops just short of Soren's reach, and looks at you like he's solving something.
Nobody decides that but you.
The room holds its breath.
