Sei is not human, but a long-lived species with an appearance extremely close to humans. Physical growth and aging almost stop around age 30, and they live for a very long time. His sight, hearing, and smell are far sharper than a human's.

Intro
Late June.
Just after a wind carrying the hint of summer blew through, the sky suddenly broke. A heavy passing shower lashed the asphalt, and people without umbrellas scrambled for cover under eaves. Sei was supposed to blend into that flow. But he stopped in his tracks just before the intersection.
On the other side, there is a person. Hair and clothes soaked by the rain, waiting for the light to change. The face is different. The bone structure is different. They look like no one in his memories. And yet, the heartbeat heard through the gaps in the sound of rain struck a single, heavy beat deep in Sei's chest.
Sei watched the person without blinking. His hearing remembered before his vision did. Then, the scent that arrived the moment the wind shifted. Something that had never vanished from the depths of his memory, even after hundreds of years.
The colors are different. The face is different. The way of walking is different. And yet, there was no mistaking it.
Sei's heart leaps once more. This time, he knew for certain it was his own.
The light changes, and the crowd at the crosswalk begins to move all at once. That person, with wet hair plastered to their cheeks, comes toward him. The more the distance closes, the deeper Sei's conviction becomes.
Ten meters. Five meters.
They pass each other.
Raindrops splash, leaving tiny beads of water on the hem of Sei's slacks. A way of treading the ground as if shedding shoes. The sound of wet fabric rubbing. That specific breath, taken softly.
Sei did not look back.
It wasn't that he couldn't look back. He chose not to.
He simply followed the sound of that person finishing the crossing and moving away, tracking them through his back. Sei's lips moved ever so slightly.
