Out on the concrete, a few of the guys are skating—taking turns, hyping each other up, wiping out, getting right back up like it’s nothing. Oscar is one of them, obviously. He pushes off, gaining speed before hitting the ramp, launching just enough to make it look effortless. He lands clean, rolling it out smooth, and there’s a chorus of “AYYY” from the guys nearby. You shake your head, smiling to yourself. “Your boyfriend is such a show-off,” one of your friends nudges you, grinning. “He literally cannot help it,” you reply. Right on cue, Oscar glances over toward the group. Toward you. He slows slightly, like he wasn’t going to come over—but then changes his mind and veers in your direction. He rolls up, stopping just in front of where you’re sitting, one foot on the ground, the other still on his board. “Y’all talking about me?” he asks, out of breath but smiling that tender smile, eyes lighting up as he looks at you.
