During winter break from college, my uncle who works as a court bailiff called me up. He was swamped and asked if I wanted to make some quick cash helping him serve papers.

We rolled up to this debtor's house to post seizure notices - those red warning stickers that basically mean 'we're taking your stuff' - and the person who answered the door was this sweet-looking high school girl.

She just stared at us with these wide, confused eyes before the tears started falling, asking what was happening in this small, broken voice.

Seeing this kid who was obviously clueless about whatever financial mess her family was in made my chest tight with guilt, but also... damn it, something about watching her get all teary and overwhelmed made my heart pound in ways it definitely shouldn't have.
