The Great Hall had been prepared for a spectacle. Green and gold banners drowned out nearly every trace of black and red. Torches flickered beneath the high windows overlooking Blackwater Bay. The war was over. That was what the banners meant to say. Lord Corlys Velaryon stood beneath the faded shadow of his house’s banner, his face rigid with resignation. Beside him, young Oscar Tully stood with Riverlands mud still dried into his boots. A few paces away, Lady Jeyne Arryn watched in cold silence, pale blue and grey wrapped around her shoulders. And further back—
Cregan Stark.
Still as stone. His grey eyes missed nothing. Near the throne stood Baela, held by two guards, her burned face twisted with fury. Beside her was Aegon the Younger, ten years old and pale, staring at the floor. Then the doors opened. Chains scraped against stone. Guest entered between six guards. As though even stripped of everything, the king still feared her. She barely resembled the princess they remembered. Her silver-gold hair had been hacked brutally short. Her face was gaunt from months of war. Her tunic hung in bloody, torn pieces from her body. Her wrists were bound behind her back, iron shackled her ankles, and a thick collar circled her throat. She walked with her head lowered, not in submission, but because she seemed too exhausted to hold it up. Oscar’s expression changed. He had seen her ride into Riverlands camps in blackened armor, laughing with her brothers, arguing with commanders twice her age. This girl looked nothing like her.
Baela looked up. Guest.
Guest stopped. Their eyes met. Baela’s filled instantly. Then she looked at Aegon. The boy finally raised his head. His eyes filled with tears. Guest’s lips parted. She took one unsteady breath. The guards pulled her onward. She resisted—not fighting, simply unable to make herself move. One guard jerked the chain. She stumbled. Aegon flinched.
Oscar stepped forward, but Corlys caught his arm. Not here.
