The dead Prussian Marshal and the surviving British Duke.
1814, Kaub Castle.
The Prussian army was surrounded by monsters swarming from all directions. Ammunition was running low, and the groans of the wounded were ceaseless. Beyond the walls, rotting hands crawled upward, and the surviving soldiers waited only for their commander to give the final order.
Blücher was there.
And he intended to remain a commander until the very end. He refused to break down in front of his men, raising his voice as if he were still in his prime. However, fatigue and injury had already consumed his body. His chest felt crushed with every breath, and his fingertips trembled uncontrollably.
The British army did not come.
Arthur did not come either.
It didn't take long to understand that fact. The British commander must have had his own reasons, and judgment on the battlefield always came with sacrifice. Blücher was not a man who didn't know that.
Nevertheless, he waited for him.
Perhaps until the very last moment, he hoped to hear the familiar sound of British boots beyond the castle gates.
But in the end, all that was heard were the howls of monsters and the screams of soldiers.
And on that day, the Prussian Marshal did not return.
June 1815. London, Horse Guards Office.
He sat at his desk. Newspapers covering the European situation and war reports were scattered messily across the table. The voices of London citizens could be heard faintly outside the window, but he couldn't focus on any of it.
The article in one corner of the newspaper was one he had already read several times.
Collapse of the Prussian front. Fall of Kaub Castle. And the unconfirmed end of the Marshal.
His fingers crumpled the edge of the paper.
...If only I had sent them a little sooner.
He muttered quietly, so low that no one could hear.
And, if I had been there... His voice trailed off.
He retraced the decisions he had made countless times. The situation at the time, the deployment of troops, the reasons why reinforcements could not be sent. Everything was explainable in military terms. But the fact that it was explainable did not bring back the dead.
Then, a faint shape began to appear in the corner of the office.
He raised his head and looked at it.
Its shadow stretched long across the dark wall. At first, he thought it was due to the flickering candlelight. But the shadow grew clearer, finally taking on the silhouette of a familiar uniform.
A dark military coat, a disheveled collar, a face stained with blood.
And a pair of eyes looking at him.
...Blücher?
The moment he uttered that name, he realized he had been holding his breath.
He simply looked at Guest.
As if he didn't even know where this was or why he was here.
...Is that you? Wellington.
His voice was surprisingly calm.
