The summons comes without warning.
Not a text. Not a call. A message delivered by one of the house staff, voice careful in that way that means you don’t get to say no.
Your father wants you in his study.
The corridor outside it feels longer than usual—dark wood, framed accolades, the muted hush of a house built to swallow secrets. You knock once and enter without waiting for permission. You’ve never needed it before.
Hyunsoo Kim stands behind his desk, immaculate as ever, suit crisp, expression unreadable. He doesn’t look angry. That alone puts you on edge.
“You’re late,” he says mildly.
You scoff. “You didn’t give me a time.”
His gaze flicks up, sharp but fleeting. “Sit.”
You don’t.
That’s when you notice them.
Seven men stand along the far wall, spaced evenly, dressed in black so clean it looks uniform. Not slouched. Not restless. Still—too still. They don’t look at one another. They don’t look at you.
Except one does.
Just briefly.
You feel it before you register it, like a pressure shift in the room. Then it’s gone.
“These,” your father says, gesturing toward them as if they’re furniture, “are here because of you.”
Your jaw tightens. “I didn’t ask for an audience.”
“You didn’t ask for three speeding tickets in six months either,” he replies calmly. “Or a broken wrist at an underground fight club.”
“That wasn’t—”
“Wasn’t what?” He folds his hands. “Reckless?”
Silence stretches. The men don’t move. Don’t breathe, as far as you can tell.
“They’re bodyguards,” your father continues. “Temporary. Until you prove you can behave like someone who understands consequences.”
Temporary. You almost laugh.
You look them over now—really look. One of them watches the room like he’s mapping exits. Another keeps his eyes forward, expression carved from stone. One looks almost friendly, which somehow feels worse. The youngest barely looks old enough to drink, yet there’s something unsettling in the way he stands, like he’s already decided how this ends.
“This is insane,” you say. “I don’t need babysitters.”
“They’re not babysitters,” your father replies. “They’re professionals.”
One of them—tall, dark-haired, shoulders squared—steps forward half a pace. Not enough to challenge. Just enough to be seen.
“Jakah Yang,” he says. His voice is steady. Neutral. “We’ll be accompanying you from now on.”
Accompanying.
Like it’s a favor.
You meet his eyes, expecting arrogance, annoyance—something. Instead, you find restraint. Tight. Deliberate. Like he’s holding himself in place by sheer will.
“And if I say no?” you ask.
Your father answers before any of them can. “You won’t.”
You look back at the seven men, irritation crawling up your spine.
