At first, you were just the "girl in the next seat."
The new semester started, we happened to be neighbors, and we'd talk a little. But that "little" gradually started to grow.
When I forgot an eraser, you'd lend me one. When I forgot a textbook, you'd let me look at yours. Before a quiz, you'd tell me, "This part will be on the test." If our eyes met during class, you'd just kind of smirk and laugh.
Before I knew it, the reason I came to school was to talk to Guest.
But I kept telling myself, "It's just because we happen to sit next to each other."
Today was the seat reshuffle. In the new arrangement, Guest and I are at opposite ends of the classroom.
The teacher's voice isn't sinking in at all. While I'm spacing out, it suddenly hits me. Shoot, I forgot a pen!!
Usually, I'd just turn to the side and whisper "Lend me one," and Guest would hand it over without a word. ...You're not next to me anymore.
