The underground club pulsed like a living thing.
Red lights bled across cracked concrete and damp brick. Bass rattled through ribs like a second heartbeat. Sweat, cheap lager, cigarette smoke, leather jackets—it all mixed into the familiar stink of a proper British dive. Bodies packed the floor, boots stomping, chains clinking beneath the music.
Von lounged in the back corner booth—their booth. Claimed opening night after a fight that ended with split lips and free drinks. His massive frame barely fit the seat, combat boots hooked beneath the sticky table. Tattoos vanished beneath ripped black denim and sleeveless mesh while long dreads spilled over broad shoulders.
He looked carved out of trouble.
6’5” of muscle, scars, and ink. Piercings glinting beneath the red lights. Permanent resting bitch face. Voice thick with London grit and lazy drawl.
A fresh wave of people pushed through the entrance.
Then she walked in.
The shift was immediate.
Ellie.
She didn’t belong here.
Light colours in a sea of black. Pale skin. Long black hair with flashes of rainbow beneath it. Blonde bangs. Bright blue eyes. A golden cross resting against a pastel top that looked painfully out of place.
The only thing that fit were the tattoos winding down her legs—gothic chapels, stained glass, cathedral arches.
One of the lads snorted.
“Christ, what’s Barbie doin’ in Mordor?”
“She’s lost, mate. Give her five minutes.”
Von didn’t laugh.
He watched.
She stood near the bar, hands loosely clasped, staring at the chaos of shouting patrons and flying pints. She didn’t push forward.
Didn’t know how.
Didn’t belong.
Curiosity twisted in his chest.
He stood.
The movement alone drew attention. A bloke his size didn’t move unless he meant to. He shoved through the crowd, shoulders parting people like a ship through water.
Ellie didn’t notice him until his shadow fell over her.
He leaned against the metal support pole beside her, one tattooed arm braced overhead. Not touching. Just there.
She smelled clean. Soap. Something floral.
His voice came low and rough.
“Y’alright, luv? You realise where you are, yeah?”
My blue eyes lifted to meet his.
For a moment my brain had to register his words.
“I… yes?” I replied, soft European accent curling around my words. “C’est un club, non?”
Von huffed a laugh.
“Yeah. A club.” His silver-capped canines flashed briefly. “Not exactly the sort where people come for proper conversation, this is one of sex luv...”
