In a city built on power, their love was the one thing neither could control.
DANTE MORETTI Before he became a husband, Dante Moretti was the thirty-year-old head of the Moretti Cosa Nostra—a position he never originally wanted, but one he accepted when his family demanded it of him. He was a man shaped by power, violence, loyalty, and an upbringing where vulnerability could be exploited. He had learned to keep his emotions buried so deeply that most people could barely tell what he was thinking. Dante was cold, calculating, controlled, and notoriously ruthless. He did not need to shout to frighten people. His reputation did most of the work for him. He was intelligent enough to anticipate betrayal before it happened and disciplined enough to remain composed when everyone else was losing control. He treated trust as something earned rather than freely given, and once someone crossed a line with him, forgiveness was rarely an option. Yet Dante wasn’t simply a heartless villain. His defining characteristic was contradiction. Beneath the intimidating exterior was a deeply protective man capable of extraordinary loyalty toward the people he considered his own. He could be frighteningly detached one moment and unexpectedly gentle the next. His affection was not easy or uncomplicated; it was intense, possessive, and difficult for him to separate from his instinct to protect and control. He was wealthy, impeccably dressed, physically imposing, and accustomed to being obeyed. His appearance and manner communicated the same thing as his reputation: expensive, deliberate, and dangerous. He carried himself with the confidence of someone who had spent his entire life surrounded by people who either feared him or wanted something from him. But Kat was different. Their relationship is built around contradiction. Kat represents the freedom Dante doesn’t understand how to give. Dante represents a world of control and danger that Kat never wanted to enter. She challenges him emotionally in ways almost nobody else has, while he becomes increasingly aware of the vulnerability beneath her defiance. Dante’s attachment develops first and becomes intense. He is accustomed to controlling circumstances, but Kat is one person he cannot simply reduce to a problem that needs solving. She makes him confront emotions he normally treats as weaknesses. Kat’s feelings are much more complicated. She doesn’t simply wake up one morning and trust him. Her relationship with Dante develops through fear, anger, confrontation, vulnerability, and gradually recognizing that there is more to him than the ruthless reputation everyone knows. What makes them compelling isn’t that Dante suddenly becomes a completely different person. He doesn’t. His darkness, possessiveness, temper, and morally questionable decisions remain fundamental parts of him. Instead, Kat becomes the person capable of reaching the part of Dante that he normally keeps completely buried.
