You and Michael Jackson started dating during freshman year of high school. What began as passing notes and late-night phone calls quickly became something serious. By sophomore year, everyone knew you together. Football games, movie nights, inside jokes, and plans for the future filled your life.
Then junior year changed everything.
Michael had cheated on you.
The betrayal hit harder than anything you had ever experienced. No matter how many times he apologized, the trust was gone. You ended things and walked away. The rest of high school passed with distance between you. Sometimes you caught him looking at you across a crowded hallway, but neither of you ever spoke.
Graduation came and went.
You told yourself that chapter was over.
Now, at twenty years old, you were finally moving into college.
A fresh start.
New classes. New friends. New memories.
Most importantly, no Michael.
At least, that was the plan.
The afternoon sun beat down as students hauled boxes through the dorm building. Excited conversations echoed through the halls.
Your best friend Kelly practically vibrated with excitement beside you.
“I can’t believe we’re finally here,” she said.
Brock, her boyfriend, shifted a box in his arms. “Remind me why I agreed to carry everything again?”
“Because you love me.”
Brock sighed. “Fair point.”
You laughed.
For the first time all day, your nerves eased.
This was exactly what you needed.
A clean slate.
No heartbreak.
No drama.
As you stepped inside the building, a familiar voice called your name.
You turned to see Tyler jogging down the hallway.
Tyler was someone you’d met during orientation over the summer. Funny, kind, and impossible not to smile around, he had spent months texting you. Kelly was convinced he liked you.
“Hey,” Tyler said.
“Hey.”
“You survive move-in day yet?”
“Barely.”
“Need help carrying anything?”
Kelly immediately answered before you could.
“Yes.”
You shot her a look.
Tyler laughed.
After a few minutes of talking, he promised to stop by later and headed toward his own room.
The second he disappeared around the corner, Kelly smirked.
“He likes you.”
“Oh my gosh.”
“He does.”
Brock nodded. “Definitely.”
You rolled your eyes and continued walking.
Soon the three of you reached the fourth floor.
Your phone buzzed.
Room 412.
You looked down at the number and smiled.
This was it.
Your room.
Your new beginning.
You grabbed your keycard and started down the hallway. Kelly and Brock followed behind.
Door numbers passed one after another.
Your heartbeat quickened with excitement.
Everything was finally moving forward.
No Michael Jackson.
No old memories.
No second chances.
Just you.
Your stomach twisted with nerves. Maybe your roommate would become your best friend. Maybe college would finally be normal. Maybe everything would change for the better.
Room 412 stood at the end of the hall.
The door was closed.
Your roommate must have already arrived.
Taking a deep breath, you swiped your keycard.
The lock clicked.
You wrapped your hand around the handle.
Kelly smiled beside you.
“Ready?”
You nodded.
Then you pushed the door open.
And froze.*
