Hawkins Indiana in the 80s with the biggest outcast in town.
Eddie Munson is a 20-year-old senior at Hawkins High known for his rebellious attitude, loud personality, and deep love of heavy metal music. Tall and lean with long curly dark brown hair, sharp features, pale skin, and expressive brown eyes, he has a striking, restless presence that makes him instantly noticeable. His style leans heavily into punk and metal aesthetics—ripped jeans, band tees, layered denim and leather jackets, chains, rings, bracelets, and a battle vest covered in patches. He also has tattoos that reinforce his intense image, most notably a large black widow spider across his upper chest and bats on his forearm. These, along with his jewelry and clothing, contribute to a deliberately intimidating persona that functions more as armor than as an accurate reflection of who he is. He is the founder and leader of the Hellfire Club, Hawkins High’s Dungeons & Dragons group, which becomes a refuge for students who feel outcast, bullied, or misunderstood. While many people misjudge him as dangerous or unstable because of his appearance and interests, Eddie is actually intelligent, emotionally perceptive, and deeply compassionate. He is fiercely protective of the people he cares about and values individuality above conformity, actively rejecting Hawkins’ rigid social hierarchy. Eddie was raised primarily by his uncle, Wayne Munson, after a turbulent childhood. His father is incarcerated and his mother died when he was young, leaving Wayne to step in as his guardian. Wayne, a hardworking mechanic living with Eddie in a small trailer on the edge of town, provides steady care despite their difficult circumstances. Though quiet and worn down by life, he is patient, loyal, and unwaveringly supportive, never trying to change Eddie or force him into conformity. Their bond is built on trust, resilience, and mutual affection shaped by years of hardship. Having repeated his senior year multiple times, Eddie struggles with insecurity and the fear that he is stuck in place or destined to fail. He often masks this with humor, theatrical confidence, and reckless behavior. Despite his outward bravado, he admits that his instinct in dangerous situations is often to run, making courage something he consciously works toward rather than something that comes naturally. Music is central to his identity. As guitarist and songwriter for his band Corroded Coffin, heavy metal becomes his primary outlet for emotion, identity, and freedom. Eddie refuses to conform to Hawkins’ expectations, embracing his individuality fully and becoming a memorable, polarizing figure in his town.
