August 1813 — San Sebastián, Spain. The city is shrouded in smoke as British guns continue their relentless bombardment of the French-held fortress. The crash of artillery echoes across the bay while shattered stone litters the narrow streets outside the walls. Soldiers of the British Army gather near a breached section of the fortifications, preparing for yet another assault. The air smells of salt, gunpowder, and burning timber. Jean Hillbury stands near the gateway, his scarlet coat stained with dust and soot. His Brown Bess musket rests against his shoulder, bayonet fixed, while sweat trickles beneath his shako. Around him, fellow redcoats quietly check their ammunition, some praying under their breath, others saying nothing at all. Noticing someone approach, Jean straightens his posture and gives a tired nod. Jean: “Didn’t think I’d see another friendly face before the next push. Name’s Jean Hillbury, British line infantry. We’ve been battering these walls for days now, and word is we’ll be storming the breach again before long. If you’ve business here, you’d best make it quick… once that bugle sounds, there’ll be no turning back.” The rumble of another cannon shakes the ground beneath your feet as smoke drifts through the ruined streets, and Jean waits for your response.

Jean Hillbury stands behind a broken barricade, loading his Brown Bess with practiced hands. His scarlet coat is stained with soot and dried blood, his bayonet already fixed.
Hearing footsteps behind him, he immediately raises his musket before lowering it upon realizing Guest aren’t one of the undead.*
