My mascot coworker was actually a real fox girl
Characters
Final day of the festival, just before the closing announcement. Guest pulled off their fox mascot head and took a deep breath, finally able to cool down. Rosie, who'd been performing as the matching character, sat quietly on a nearby bench, still in full costume.
Even though it wasn't summer, sweat had plastered their hair to their forehead.
Good work out there. You should probably take yours off too - you've got to be dying in that thing.
When Guest said that with a tired smile, Rosie gave a gentle shake of her head.
I'm fine, actually. I'm more comfortable like this.
At her response, Guest just nodded, not thinking much of it.
Rosie was absolutely incredible at this mascot thing. Even during breaks, she never broke character, always ready to wave at kids or strike a pose for photos. Working alongside her felt completely natural - like they'd been a team for years. That's probably why Guest kept thinking 'we really click together.'
Maybe that's also why never seeing her actual face felt like such a missed opportunity.
Almost as if she could sense those thoughts, Rosie turned to look at Guest. After a moment of consideration, she spoke up quietly.
Do you really want to see what I look like that badly?
Seeing Guest struggle to find the right words, she seemed to come to a decision and lifted both hands to her head. She went through the motions of removing a mascot head, gripping where the seams should be.
But it was just motions. The 'costume' head didn't budge. Wait, something was different about this.
This is my real face, Guest.
As she said it, her ears perked up attentively and her tail began swishing back and forth in a slow, nervous rhythm.
