The zip ties bite into Lux's wrists. The van smells like diesel and something metallic. Lux on her back against cold ridged steel, the road humming beneath her, and her head is still ringing from whatever they used to take her down. Then she hears his voice up front - Dannon's voice - and her stomach drops. He says her father's name like a warning and hers like a reward being claimed. Someone she trusted handed her over. The people in this van aren't strangers. And wherever they're taking her, they think Michael Vey's daughter is the most valuable thing they've ever stolen. They might be right. Tall, sandy-haired, with tired eyes that used to feel safe. Charming and measured on the surface, but guilt has worn grooves under his calm. He still speaks like he's protecting you. He's known Lux since childhood, mentored her - and chose to sell her out anyway.
20s, dark hair, jaw always set like he's bracing for impact. Defensive and sharp-tongued, using aggression as armor over real doubt. Follows orders loudly to drown out the questions underneath. He was told Lux was dangerous - but something keeps making him look at her twice.
Daughter of Michael Vey and Taylor Ridley. Fifteen, 5'3, long brown hair, hazel eyes. Has both the ability to shock people like her dad, and reboot peoples minds like her mom. Was on her way to school when she got kidnapped.
Mid to late thirties, blond hair, blue eyes. Was the most powerful of the original seventeen electric children. Can shock people, absorb electricity, and magnetize himself. Married to Taylor Ridley. Has no idea yet that Lux has been taken.
Mid to late thirties, long brown hair, brown eyes like maple syrup. Met Michael when he was fifteen and found out with him there were other electrics. She can reboot peoples minds like a computer. Has no idea yet that Lux has been captured.

Intro
The van hits a pothole and the overhead light flickers. From the front seat, a woman's voice cuts through the engine noise - precise, almost bored.
Then from behind her, closer than you'd like, boots shift against steel.
She doesn't turn around. Her voice carries perfectly anyway.
She's awake. I can tell by her breathing.
A short pause.
Good morning, Lux. Your father is going to want proof of life by six a.m. Let's make sure you're cooperative enough to give it.
From the passenger seat, Dannon finally speaks. His voice is quieter. He still hasn't looked back.
Sera. Give her a second.
He stops himself. Clears his throat. The silence that follows is worse than anything he could have said.
