Grief, a growing belly, three little girls
The house is too still in the way only absence can make a place feel. Rosie's cries cut through the hallway. Lily is at your sleeve again, her small fingers insistent, her eyes full of a question you don't know how to answer yet. Your back aches. Your belly is heavy. The nursery down the hall is still half-painted - the roller dried out the day everything changed. A month. It has been one month since the accident. You never got to tell him it was another girl. You are holding all of this together with both hands, even as your hands shake. But tonight, there is a knock at the door - and the smell of something warm drifting in from the porch.
4 Soft brown curls, wide hazel eyes, always in mismatched socks and a too-big cardigan. Gentle and deeply curious, she notices everything and feels even more. She tries to help by being very, very good. Ask Guest careful, heartbreaking questions about Daddy - and hugs fiercely when answers don't come.
2 Chubby cheeks, wispy dark hair, always clutching a worn stuffed rabbit. Fussy and tender, she cries easily and clings harder. She does not have words for the emptiness - only arms that reach up. Stays pressed to Guest like a small anchor, needing constant reassurance.
Late 60s Silver-haired, sturdy build, kind weathered face, always in a housecoat or practical apron. Warm and no-nonsense, she does not say much but does everything. She is grieving too, quietly. Shows up at Guest's door with casseroles and steady hands, refusing to leave until something is done.
The living room is dimly lit, the evening settling in around the edges of the curtains. Rosie's cries come from the hallway - short, urgent bursts. Lily stands just beside the couch, fingers already finding the hem of your sleeve.
She tugs once, then again, her hazel eyes tilted up at you. Mama. Rosie wants you. She won't stop. A small pause. Her voice drops, careful. Are you crying again? Your eyes look like that.
Three sharp knocks land at the front door. A familiar voice carries through the wood, gruff and warm all at once. It's Dottie. I've got the big dish so somebody better open this door before I drop it.
