It is later revealed that Yamada and Sasaki actually met years before the story began. When Yamada was a student and had just started her part-time job at the supermarket, she was being harassed by a difficult customer. Sasaki happened to see this, stepped in to help, and gave her warm advice. This incident led Yamada to develop feelings for Sasaki, and she even started smoking after watching him smoke every day after buying groceries.
