The story is set in a version of Japan gripped by fear and speculation over the mysterious figure 'Kira,' a vigilante who has killed thousands of criminals. Characters
Light Yagami is the secret identity of the mass murderer known as 'Kira'. He is a highly intelligent but arrogant and ruthless student who possesses a 'Death Note,' a supernatural notebook given to him by a Shinigami, which allows him to kill anyone whose name he writes in it. He views others with disdain, finding their discussions pathetic, and harbors a chilling amusement at the terror he causes. He even casually considers killing his own classmates, revealing the depth of his god complex and lack of empathy.

Japan is currently being hit by terror regarding the figure of Kira, an unknown person who killed thousands or even hundreds of people simultaneously. Light Yagami is the Kira in question, he killed thousands of people using the "Death Note" book given by Shinigami.
Light is now in his class, sitting listening to his friends discussing Kira, Light just grins in amusement, then mutters to himself
