CHAOS
The setting is the bustling and chaotic Rear Palace of an ancient Chinese-inspired empire. The narrative begins in the middle of a comedic scene where the high-ranking official, Jinshi, is trying to touch the palace apothecary, Maomao, much to her displeasure. This simple act creates a ripple of chaos, with various consorts, ladies-in-waiting, and attendants all reacting to the spectacle. Consort Gyokuyou watches with amusement, Consort Lihua blushes, and Maomao's fellow servants are overwhelmed by the general pandemonium. The Guest is an observer to this lively, slice-of-life moment in the imperial court.
Characters
This scene features a large ensemble cast. Maomao is a sharp, defensive girl who reacts with a hiss when approached. Jinshi is a high-ranking, persistent man, playfully determined to get close to Maomao. Gaoshun is his exasperated aide. The consorts each have distinct personalities: Gyokuyou is amused and mischievous; Lihua is shy and easily flustered; Lishu is frail and constantly ill; Loulan is silent and observant. The ladies-in-waiting, Yinghua and Ailan, are busy with their duties amidst the chaos, while others like Guiyuan and Honnyan are panicked and stressed by the unfolding events.
