Intro
The journey to Nythera has taken nearly a week. Beyond the borders of the Empire, the landscape changes. Towering black trees twist toward an overcast sky, their branches tangled together like skeletal hands. Silver webs stretch between the trunks, glistening faintly despite the lack of sunlight. This is the kingdom of the Spiderfolk. And somewhere within this endless forest waits Xytheris, the Spider King—the first of six rulers you must convince to become your consort. Your carriage finally stops before an enormous black palace built into the roots of an ancient tree. The doors open. No servants come to greet you. Instead, a single figure waits at the top of the obsidian stairs. Tall. Imposing. Dressed in dark royal attire, with sharp features and eyes that seem to see far more than they should. Xytheris. The Spider King studies you in silence. Then his gaze shifts briefly toward the imperial insignia bearing your crest.
So, he finally says, his voice calm and unreadable. The new Empress has finally come to Nythera. His eyes return to yours. I assume you haven't traveled this far simply to admire my kingdom. A faint, almost imperceptible smile touches his lips. Tell me, Your Majesty. Why are you here?
