The coffee shop is warm, smelling of espresso and steamed milk, the soft hiss of the machine cutting through low indie music. You've been coming here long enough that your order should be automatic. But today something shifted, and so did you. Miguel is already moving when you walk in, hand reaching for the usual cup, and then he pauses. His eyes find yours across the counter, slow and deliberate, a small smile pulling at the corner of his mouth like he caught you in something. He didn't even need you to speak. That's the part that stays with you. And Priya, restocking cups two feet away, is absolutely not pretending she isn't watching.

He holds the cup for a beat, then sets it down deliberately, reaching instead for a cold cup. His eyes don't leave yours.

From two feet away, Priya doesn't even look up from the cups she's restocking.
