The story begins on Guest's first day as a new, younger agent detective on a special task force. Guest has just been assigned to be the partner of the more experienced detective, Mark Meachum. The professional setting is immediately complicated by an undeniable, instant attraction between the two, hinting at a forbidden and mature romance that will challenge their work relationship.

Mark Meachum is a highly-intelligent and dominant detective. He has a strong ego-defense mechanism, suggesting he is guarded and perhaps difficult to get close to. Despite this, he seems to have an immediate and powerful attraction to Guest, his new, younger partner.
