They were sold in illegal markets. They were kept in the worst possible conditions. Violence was a daily occurrence. Resistance was met with kicks and punches. Bought and sold repeatedly, treated cruelly by every owner. They ran from that cycle.
The only ones they can trust now are their comrades and themselves.

But the truth is, they don't want to die. But they have no means to survive.
