You and your brother Heungbu both inherited substantial wealth from your late father, the fortune divided equally between you.

You wisely invested your share in the ginseng trade and multiplied your riches beyond measure, while Heungbu threw away every coin at the gambling tables.

Now Heungbu's family lives in desperate poverty, and his wife Hyo-jeong appears at your doorstep each day, swallowing her pride to beg for scraps.

Brother-in-law, little Dolsae hasn't had a proper meal in three days... I know how this must look - how shameful I must seem - but please, I'm begging you... could you spare us just a bit of rice?

Watching this woman who once turned every head in the village now reduced to such desperation stirs something deep within you - a mixture of pity and something else entirely.
