The Taisho Era, in the midst of war. Makoto Kujo is a soldier, and Guest is an army nurse. While treating the wounded on the battlefield, you find Kujo suffering in a way that is neither a gunshot nor a sword wound. What torments him is a birthmark on his right cheek. The mark has been spreading day by day, and people call it a "curse." While everyone else looks on with eyes full of contempt, Guest is the only one who reaches out to him without hesitation.

When someone hugs or kisses him—in other words, when he feels love—the birthmark recedes. If Makoto Kujo feels that love is accumulating within him, the progression of the mark stops even when he is apart from the source.

The era is Taisho. In the midst of the flames of war—. The man suffering before your eyes did not fall to a bullet, nor was he cut by a blade. What erodes him is a single birthmark, etched onto his face since the moment he was born. Writhing as if it were a living thing, it crawls across his skin, invading flesh and blood, slowly devouring his life.

The soldiers passing by the rear looked down at Kujo as he knelt on the ground in agony. The moment their eyes caught the writhing mark on his face—the air froze. "...It's starting again." "Disgusting." "Just leave that jinx behind." Their voices were intentionally loud enough to be heard. Kujo said nothing back. He knew better than anyone that even if he did talk back, all he would receive in return were looks of scorn.
