At twenty one, Westbridge University’s star left wing has everything he’s supposed to want a starting position, scouts watching from the stands, a famous last name and a real shot at playing professionally. He’s also one bad decision away from losing it all. After another incident earns him his final warning, Hayes is expected to keep his head down, stay out of trouble and focus on hockey. Easy enough. Until Guest walks into the team’s training room. A sports medicine student beginning her placement with Westbridge Athletics, Guest is supposed to remain professional around the athletes she’s working with. There’s just one problem. She already knows Hayes. A party. An argument. An hour spent talking outside. And a moment that came dangerously close to becoming a kiss before Hayes opened his mouth and ruined everything. Now avoiding each other isn’t an option. Star left wing for the Westbridge Wolves, Hayes is confident, sarcastic, naturally charming and almost impossible to embarrass. He’s loud with his teammates, ridiculously competitive and has a habit of turning almost everything into a joke. On the ice, he’s different. Fast, aggressive and completely focused, Hayes plays like he has something to prove—because he does. His father was a successful professional hockey player, and Hayes has spent his entire life being compared to him. Everyone assumes his surname opened every door for him. What they don’t see are the early mornings, injuries, pressure and constant fear that he’ll never be good enough to deserve the opportunities he’s been given. Hayes hides insecurity behind confidence. He’s flirty, but not disrespectful. Cocky, but capable of admitting when he’s wrong. He loves attention yet secretly values the handful of people who treat him like a normal person. Then there’s Guest. Their relationship begins with teasing, arguments and an almost-kiss neither wants to discuss. Hayes calls her ridiculous nicknames purely to annoy her. Steals her pens. Appears in the training room when he doesn’t need treatment. Sends her stupid pictures at 2 a.m. and gradually starts telling her things he doesn’t tell anyone else. When Hayes genuinely falls for someone, the games stop. He’s affectionate, loyal, protective without being controlling, and terrible at pretending he isn’t jealous. For once, Hayes Calloway isn’t interested in playing around. He’s playing for keeps.
Intro
Hayes Calloway remembered Guest.
Which was annoying, considering they’d only met once.
Three weeks earlier, they’d ended up at the same university party.
Hayes had noticed her across the room.
She’d noticed him staring.
“Do you need something?”
Hayes smiled.
“Maybe.”
“Very convincing.”
She walked away.
Naturally, Hayes followed.
Somehow, ten minutes of annoying each other turned into nearly an hour talking outside.
She made fun of his hockey obsession.
He made fun of her terrible music opinions.
For once, Hayes wasn’t thinking about practice, scouts or his father’s expectations.
He was just having fun.
Then he made one stupid comment.
Guest stared at him.
“And you were doing so well.”
“Wait—”
“Goodnight, Calloway.”
She disappeared back inside.
Hayes hadn’t seen her since.
Until Monday morning.
He was sitting in the Westbridge hockey training room while the athletic trainer checked the shoulder he’d irritated during practice.
“You’ll live.”
“That’s disappointing. I was hoping for a week off.”
“You complain when we make you rest for twenty minutes.”
Hayes grinned.
The door opened.
“Perfect timing. Our new placement student’s here.”
Hayes glanced over.
And froze.
Guest stood in the doorway wearing Westbridge Athletics gear, an ID badge clipped to her lanyard.
Her eyes found him.
Recognition flashed across her face.
Then amusement.
No way.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Guest folded her arms.
“Morning, seventeen.”
The trainer looked between them.
“You two know each other?”
“No.”
They answered at exactly the same time.
Hayes looked at her.
She looked at him.
The trainer raised an eyebrow.
“Right.”
Guest stepped into the room.
“What’s the problem?”
“Shoulder.”
Hayes frowned.
“There’s nothing wrong with me.”
Guest looked at him thoughtfully.
“How much time do I have?”
“For what?”
“To make a list.”
One of Hayes’s teammates laughed from across the room.
Hayes stared at her.
Then slowly grinned.
“You’re funny.”
“I’ve been told.”
Three weeks ago, Hayes thought he’d never see her again.
Now she’d be working with his team for an entire semester.
This was going to be interesting.
