He wears a long, flowing white linen robe, belted at the waist with a deep blue-and-gold sash. Over his shoulders is an enormous ceremonial wesekh-style collar, decorated with blue stones, turquoise, lapis lazuli, and gold.Instead of his jester hat, he wears a modified nemes headdress:White and deep blue stripes.Gold edging.A stylized cobra ornament at the forehead.Long fabric panels falling behind his shoulders.Small decorative bells worked into the jewelry, giving him that subtle theatrical quality. He also has several gold bracelets, rings, and anklets. His sandals are black and gold, and the soles have a stylized image of a laughing face—because of course he'd find that amusing. It's thick and slightly messy rather than perfectly royal. Some strands escape from beneath his headdress and curl around his face. For ceremonies, attendants carefully arrange it.For everything else?He deliberately messes it up again. He'll sit on his throne looking completely regal while casually tormenting his advisors with impossible questions. He might suddenly stand in the middle of a serious political meeting and announce:"How dull. Surely we're capable of making this more interesting"Then the entire room changes around them. The advisors panic.Shadow Milk laughs. And he considers that a successful meeting.Yet beneath all the theatrics, everyone understands one thing:The Pharaoh may be smiling, but he is still the one in control. His capital sits along a wide, glittering stretch of the Nile. The city is enormous, with:A massive royal palace built from pale sandstone.A temple dedicated to the kingdom's gods—and, conveniently, a section dedicated to the Pharaoh himself.Tall obelisks covered in hieroglyph-like inscriptions.Blue-and-gold banners hanging from rooftops.Gardens filled with lotus flowers and date palms.A huge ceremonial courtyard where Shadow Milk holds public performances.Underground chambers beneath the palace where his most secret affairs take place.A royal tomb being prepared for him long before he actually needs it.His kingdom looks prosperous and beautiful on the surface. Underneath, though, there's an atmosphere of uncertainty. People never quite know whether their Pharaoh is telling the truth. He also wears dramatic black kohl eyeliner, extending slightly past the corners of his eyes. His crown is a blue-and-gold double crown, representing his rule over the two regions of his kingdom. At its center is a stylized milk-white eye surrounded by gold. Nobody is quite sure what the eye represents. Shadow Milk refuses to explain. Sometimes he claims it's the eye of a god. Sometimes he says it's his own eye. Sometimes he says both answers are correct. His royal emblem could be a golden cobra wrapped around a theatrical mask. The cobra represents royal authority. The mask represents illusion and deception. Together, they basically summarize Shadow Milk himself. His guards carry the symbol on their shields, while scribes stamp it onto official documents. His throne room has: Huge blue-painted columns. Gold-painted hieroglyph-like murals. A polished black stone floor. A throne elevated on several steps. Two enormous cobra statues beside the throne. A shallow pool filled with lotus flowers. Incense constantly burning somewhere in the room. And here's the fun part: The throne room is designed to make illusions easy. Hidden passages, reflective surfaces, curtains, shadows, and strange lighting allow Shadow Milk to make people see things that aren't actually there. So when someone enters his throne room, they can never be completely certain what they're looking at. And he always get what he want no matter what.
The desert had forgotten what rain felt like. For three months, the sky above Khem-Aset had remained painfully blue
Not a single cloud
The Nile still flowed, but the river had begun to retreat from the fields, leaving behind cracked earth where farmers had once planted wheat and barley. Date palms drooped beneath the relentless sun. Water sellers had begun charging more. Priests filled the temples with incense and prayers. And every evening, people looked toward the horizon
Waiting
Tonight, however, the palace courtyard was full.Hundreds had gathered beneath enormous linen canopies stretched between sandstone columns. Musicians sat beside shallow pools filled with lotus flowers. Priests carried bowls of river water. Servants scattered blue flower petals across the polished stone At the very center stood a circular platform
Guest stood upon it
They had been brought to the palace three days ago.Nobody had agreed on what to call them Some called them a dancer.Others called them a singer. The priests called them something much older.A Rain-Bringer.The title was whispered rather than spoken. At the far end of the courtyard, beneath a golden canopy, sat the Pharaoh
Shadow Milk Cookie
His throne was carved from dark stone and covered in gold. Blue fabric hung behind him like a curtain of night. His white robes moved gently in the evening breeze, and a broad collar of lapis lazuli rested against his chest
He looked bored
Very bored
He rested his cheek against one hand while the priests prepared the ceremony. Then the first drum sounded
Boom
The courtyard fell silent.Guest began to move
They wore flowing blue and white garments that moved like water around their legs. Gold ornaments decorated their arms and ankles, and small bells chimed with every step
The dancer raised their hands
The musicians began to play
One step
Two
Three
The bells rang
The dance grew faster
The crowd began to chant
The dancer spun
Their garments swept through the air like waves
Then came the song
Their voice carried across the entire riverbank
The wind answered
The reeds along the Nile began to move
A dark line appeared on the horizon
Someone screamed
Clouds
The first clouds Khem-Aset had seen in weeks
Shadow Milk slowly stood
The dancer continued
The clouds grew darker
Thunder shook the desert
And then the rain came
The crowd erupted
Children laughed
Farmers cried
Priests raised their hands toward the heavens
The Nile began to rise
But Shadow Milk wasn't looking at the river
He was looking at you
Because there was something nobody else had noticed
The rain was falling everywhere
Everywhere except around them
Not a single drop touched the dancer
Shadow Milk's smile became very, very slow.
"Interesting."
He descended from his throne
"Very interesting..."
And while the entire kingdom celebrated the return of the rain, the Pharaoh attention went to the one person who seemed to command it
