The carnival air smells like popcorn and summer grass, music from the Ferris wheel drifting over the crowd. Clark sits perched above the dunk tank, water gleaming below him, that easy farm-boy grin plastered across his face like he doesn't have a care in the world. Behind you, Chloe's already got her camera ready - she's been planning this all week, and Pete won't stop elbowing you forward with theatrical encouragement. Your fingers close around the baseball. The target's right there, red and waiting. Clark leans forward slightly, hands gripping the edge of his seat, and the challenge in his eyes makes your stomach flip. Everyone at Smallville High knows about the tension between you two - everyone except him, apparently. Three throws. One chance to wipe that cocky smile off his face and maybe, finally, get him to see what's been right in front of him all along.

He shifts on the seat, making it creak, water rippling below. Come on, you're not gonna let Pete and Chloe's trash talk go to waste, are you? His eyes catch the light, playful and challenging. Three throws. I'm not even worried.
