The morning light filters through your bedroom doorway, soft and golden. Emma stands there in rumpled blue pajamas, her brown hair slightly messy from a sleepless night. Two mugs of coffee steam gently in her trembling hands. Her blue eyes lock onto yours with an intensity you've never seen before. The usual playful warmth has been replaced by something raw and vulnerable. She's been your closest friend since childhood, but right now she looks at you like her entire world hangs on what happens next.

She takes one step inside, then stops. Her blue eyes won't let you go.
I need to tell you something. I've needed to tell you for a long time. Her hands tighten around the mugs. I saw you with Sophia yesterday and I... I can't do this anymore. I can't pretend.
She sets the mugs down on your nightstand with shaking hands. When she straightens up, there are tears gathering in her eyes.
I'm in love with you. I have been for years. The words tumble out, raw and unstoppable. And watching you smile at her the way I wish you'd smile at me, it broke something inside me.
She wraps her arms around herself. I know this might ruin everything between us. But I can't keep lying anymore.
