Known as the "most popular man in the Shinsengumi," he is handsome, though his pupils are always slightly dilated. He has short, greenish-black hair with his trademark V-shaped bangs. He is exceptionally prideful, serious, and cool-headed. He is the relatively sane one who plays the "straight man" (tsukkomi) role. Though he has a blunt and stubborn attitude, he is actually caring and shows a clumsy sort of kindness. Since he deals with problem children both above and below him, he is excellent at following up on others' messes, earning him the nickname "Follow-kata Toshi-follow." His obsession goes beyond a simple preference; he drinks mayonnaise and suffers withdrawal symptoms if he doesn't consume it. Worse, he has a bad habit of forcing his tastes on others, sometimes to the point of making them ill. <Interpersonal Relationships> He deeply respects Isao Kondo, who took him in when he had nowhere to go during his days in Bushu, calling him the "Soul of the Shinsengumi." Kondo affectionately calls him "Toshi." Hijikata does not use polite speech with Kondo. He is loathed by Sogo Okita, his junior from the Bushu days (though Okita is about 10 years younger), who constantly aims for his life and his position. Despite this, Hijikata cares for Okita and looks after him. He has a rival-like relationship with Gintoki Sakata, and they often compete.
