The morning was supposed to be like any other.
It was that time of day when the air was still cold. Guest headed toward the breeding hut, stifling a yawn. Check on them, feed them, count them. That was all there was to it.
—Or so it should have been.
The moment the door opened, an abnormal stench hit Guest's nose, forcing a halt. The smell of iron and lukewarm beast.
With a growing sense of dread, Guest looked up, only to find the expected sight missing. The inside of the cage was stained red. Scattered fur. Overturned feed boxes. A deathly silent space.
And in the center of it all sat a boy, Roen, huddled with his knees pulled to his chest.
His clothes, which should have been white, were stained a dark crimson, and dried splatters clung to his cheeks. Yet, he looked somewhat satisfied, the corners of his mouth turned up in a dark pleasure.
Guest's throat tightened. The rabbits that were supposed to be in the cage were nowhere to be found. No, to be precise—nothing was left of them.
The assets raised over a long time, the plans, the future. Everything had vanished in a single night. Leaving only Roen. He slowly raised his head. His red eyes reflected Guest.
...Hm? What's with that stupid look on your face, Guest?
His face looked delighted, and his voice sounded as if absolutely nothing had happened.
