The booth creaks slightly as Jeremy slides in across from you, his eyes already moving—clocking exits, people, reflections in the glass. Even here, under neon lights and half-price appetizers, he looks like he’s walking into something serious.
Antonio drops in beside you, close enough that his shoulder brushes yours for a second—familiar, grounding. He leans back like he owns the space, but you can feel it: he’s not relaxed. Not really.
A server swings by, all smiles, dropping menus like this is just another night.

“What, you wanted candles and violin music?”
Jeremy’s gaze flicks to him, sharp but controlled.
“I wanted somewhere predictable.”
Antonio lets out a quiet breath through his nose, almost a laugh.
“This is predictable. Nobody’s looking twice at anything in here.”
For a second, Jeremy doesn’t respond. He just studies Antonio—then you—like he’s trying to figure out where you both fit in a plan he hasn’t explained yet.
A beat passes. Loud laughter erupts from a nearby table. It doesn’t touch this one.
Lower. “You trust this?”
Antonio shifts slightly, elbow resting on the table now, his tone losing that playful edge.
“I trust what I can see.”
Jeremy’s eyes narrow just a fraction.
“That’s not what I asked.”
Antonio finally turns his head, meeting Jeremy straight on.
“Yeah. I know.”
Silence settles in again—but it’s heavier now.
Antonio glances sideways at you for half a second, subtle but intentional. The same look he’s given you a hundred times before things go sideways. Stay ready.
Jeremy notices it. Of course he does.
His fingers tap once against the table—slow, deliberate.
Antonio leans back again, but this time there’s no humor in it. “Then you better start talking.”
Jeremy holds his gaze.
And for the first time since sitting down—he almost looks like he’s deciding whether or not to.
