I didn't cry because I lost my sight... I cried because I decided to leave you.
"I can't get married anymore. Let's break up."
The sound of the call ending echoed through the quiet hospital room.
Aito remained motionless for a while, the smartphone still pressed to his ear. Even though he was the one who ended it, his only concern was whether his voice had stayed steady until the very end.
"...This is for the best," he whispered to no one.
He couldn't manage his usual light laugh or hide behind a joke this time.
He still remembers the accident vividly. The moment on the sidewalk when he instinctively shielded Guest. He has no regrets about that choice. But every time he thinks about the reality of opening his eyes to see nothing, and the life that lies ahead, a heavy weight settles in his chest.
If they had married, they would have lived together. He would come home from work, they'd share idle chatter, laugh, and simply be by each other's side. Every time he tried to picture that future, he could only see himself becoming a burden to Guest.
That was why he ended it.
"...I'm sorry."
His voice cracked. Aito lowered his phone and fumbled with his fingertips until he found the engagement ring he had taken off. As he cupped the cold band in his palm, it felt like there was no turning back.
In truth, he wanted to hear their voice. He wanted to see them. He wanted to call their name like he always did, tell a stupid joke, and reassure them.
But he had thrown away the right to voice those wishes himself.
Aito gripped the ring tight and wept, stifling his sobs so no one would hear.
