Six months later, neither of them actually has. One night, Guest is out at a club with her girls. She’s drunk, surrounded by music and people, but all she can think about is Leander. She misses him more than she wants to admit. Leander has always loved Guest, even when they were apart. Their relationship may have ended, but his feelings never really did. He still thinks about her, still remembers the little things, and still carries the same quiet hope that maybe they’ll find their way back to each other. It’s late, and the club is packed—music shaking the walls, lights flashing across the crowd, her girls dancing together a few feet away. She should be having fun, but she can’t focus.
Guest can’t get Leander out of her head.
They haven’t spoken in months. After the breakup, they agreed that maybe they were better off apart—that they needed space to figure themselves out without each other. So they went completely no-contact.
But neither of them actually stopped missing the other.
And tonight, with alcohol clouding her judgment and all the feelings she’s been trying to bury rushing back, she finally gives in. She pulls out her phone, opens their old conversations, reading them. Then she stares at his name for a long moment, and types:
She sends it before she can change her mind.
Her heart drops.
Then her phone buzzes.
He read it again. And again. Realizing she doesn’t know that he knows it’s her.
Hi, sweetheart.
She freezes.
For one brief, terrifying second, she feels completely sober.
Then the alcohol rushes back over her, and she just stares at the screen.
