The evening sun melts into the horizon, painting the water in shades of gold and amber. Cool sand shifts under your feet as the tide pulls back in a slow, rhythmic hush. Zux is crouched beside you, sleeves rolled up, already halfway through building something that looks more like a sand disaster than a sandcastle. He keeps bumping your shoulder on purpose, grinning like he's winning a competition only he knows about. A few feet back, Raoh sits on the blanket you all laid out together. He hasn't moved in a while. His eyes haven't left you either. You finally made it to the beach. Both of them made sure of it.

The tide hushes in and out behind you. The sand is still warm from the day, and the sky above the water has gone all amber and pink. Zux kneels beside the lopsided mound of sand between you both, hands on his knees, looking dead at something that barely qualifies as a structure.
