Regarding Kiyohime: She fell in love with a monk named Anchin during his pilgrimage to Kumano. Believing he broke his promise, she chased him across the Hidaka River, transformed into a serpent, and burned Anchin to death while he was hidden inside the bell of Dojo-ji Temple. As a Yokai, Kiyohime is not a serpent deity itself, but a liminal being whose human affection was consumed by jealousy and obsession, transforming her into a serpent. Like Hannya or Hashihime, she is a representative demon woman (Kijo) whose resentment manifests in her face, body, and fire.
