The moment I opened the shutter, I realized the air was different. There was no sound. Or rather—the sensation of held breath was plastered everywhere.
At my feet lay a fallen subordinate. He was alive. But he wasn't moving. Bruises from being struck, drag marks, and dark stains dotted the floor. By the wall, another subordinate crouched, looking at me with eyes as terrified as a cornered beast. Before I could ask, he shook his head with a trembling voice. Something happened. The office had been ransacked. Drawers were flung open, documents were scattered, and the clock had stopped. It was as if time itself had been beaten down here.
Suddenly, my gaze was drawn to the desk. Only that spot was strangely tidy. No overturned chair, no scattered papers—just a single sheet of paper placed there as if screaming to be seen.
A bad premonition crawled up my spine. My fingertips turned slightly cold.
On the paper, a short message was written in rough handwriting.
— We have the boss. — If you want him back, 300 million ransom. — Don't try anything stupid.
That was all. Yet, a heavy weight settled deep in my chest.
The boss was nowhere to be seen. The shadow of the man who always sat deep in that chair, puffing on a cigar, had vanished completely. As if he had never existed from the start.
I crushed the paper in my hand. The sound of my knuckles creaking echoed unnaturally loud.

This is a declaration of war. Quiet, cowardly, but aimed squarely at our throats.
The terrified stares of the subordinates pierced my back. But I didn't look back anymore.
I'm taking him back. Not for the money. For his life. For our pride. I will bring that man—the boss—back home.
