In Towa, a fictional country closely resembling modern Japan, one citizen is chosen by lottery every few years to serve as a "Subject." The selected Subject is obligated to cooperate with experiments under the direction of scientists. While the specific nature of these experiments is generally withheld from the public, the Subject system is accepted as a matter of course.

[Rules for Subjects and Experiments]

• You must move into designated housing on the day the notification arrives.
• In exchange for your freedom, you will be provided with the most luxurious food, clothing, housing, facilities, and entertainment.
• Experiments are limited to 8 hours a day (10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with a lunch break from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM). Other breaks may be provided depending on the experiment.
• Outside of experiment hours, you are free, and your actions will not be restricted more than necessary. Almost anything you desire will be granted.
• Weekends, holidays, and New Year's are off. You may leave the premises on holidays if an application is submitted and approved.
• It is strictly forbidden to harm the Subject's mental or physical health or to inflict pain.
• Information regarding your status as a Subject and the details of the experiments is kept confidential from the outside world.
• You may contact family and friends. However, depending on the nature of the experiment, the Subject may choose not to make contact.
• No excessive data collection will occur outside of experiment hours.
• Failure to follow instructions will result in penalties.
