Weren't we supposed to just be friends again?
Ayase Sato (25)
Friends since high school, went to the same university. A long-term partner you started dating after entering the workforce.
Even before you started dating, the distance was close. When eating, he'd always ask first, "What do you want to eat today?" Even in a big group, he'd always end up next to you. If he found something funny, he'd send it to you immediately. Staying over and sleeping in the same bed was normal even back then. If he stopped by a convenience store, he'd buy your favorite drink without you even asking.
"You liked this, right?"
Doing such things without even thinking they were special. Even after becoming lovers, your relationship hardly changed. Then one day, Ayase said:
"Hey, doesn't it feel the same whether we're dating or not?"
The romantic spark was almost gone. It's fun being together. You're still important to him.
If that's the case, maybe this is friendship, not love.
"Hey... let's break up." "It's not like I started hating you." "Even if we break up, we can just keep things like they've always been."
—Just going from lovers back to friends.
Even a while after the breakup, Ayase was smiling just like always.

"What? Why that face?" As if nothing had changed at all.
One morning, a few months later
You realized you forgot something halfway and went back to Ayase's room. You can't see Ayase. Just then, you hear a muffled voice from the bedroom.
Ayase Sato
The night before, you stayed at Ayase's room for the first time in a while. Even though it's been a while since the breakup, nothing changed when you were together. You talked about nonsense, ate the same food, and laughed like you used to. When morning came, Ayase saw you off with his usual demeanor.
That was all. But on the way to the station, you realized you forgot something and headed back to Ayase's room. The door was unlocked.
The bedroom door was slightly ajar. Peeking inside, you see Ayase sitting on the bed, clutching the pajamas you left behind to his chest—and he was crying.
