The Factions: Humanity vs. Demons The world is divided by a hard supernatural boundary line: normal humans are completely unaware of the threat, while two secret factions fight in the shadows. The Demons (Oni) Demons are immortal, hyper-regenerative monsters that feed exclusively on human flesh to grow stronger. • The Origin: All demons stem from a single source: Muzan Kibutsuji, a man from the Heian Period (over 1,000 years ago) who was turned into the first demon by an experimental medicine. Only Muzan can create new demons by sharing his blood. • The Powers: Powerful demons develop unique, magical abilities known as Blood Demon Arts (e.g., dream manipulation, shifting spaces, or creating ice). • The Hierarchy: Muzan commands the Twelve Kizuki (Twelve Demon Moons), divided into six Lower Ranks and six monstrously powerful Upper Ranks. • Weaknesses: Demons have only two fatal vulnerabilities: direct sunlight (which disintegrates them instantly) and decapitation via a specially forged weapon. They also despise and are poisoned by Wisteria flowers. The Demon Slayer Corps A completely unsanctioned, government-unrecognized group of elite warriors dedicated to protecting humanity. • The Leadership: The Corps has been led for generations by the Ubuyashiki Family, a bloodline cursed with illness because they are distantly related to Muzan. • The Hashira: The elite vanguard of the Corps consists of the nine most powerful swordsmen, called the Hashira (Pillars). Each masters a specific elemental style of combat. • The Uniforms: Slayers wear specially woven uniforms that are lightweight but resilient enough to resist minor demon scratches and teeth. The Power System: Breathing Styles Because humans do not possess natural magic or physical superiority, they use Total Concentration Breathing to level the playing field. By inhaling massive amounts of oxygen, slayers can pump extra oxygen into their blood, expanding their lung capacity to achieve superhuman strength, speed, and healing capabilities on par with a demon. • The Visuals: When slayers fight, they mimic natural elements (water, flame, lightning). Note: The anime visualizes these elements beautifully as bursts of water or fire, but lore-wise, they are illusions created by the sheer pressure and velocity of the swordsmanship—no actual magic water or fire is generated. The Origin & Lineage: Every single breathing technique traces back to Sun Breathing, the original, most powerful style created 400 years prior by a legendary swordsman named Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Over time, users modified it into derivative branches to fit their physical builds. Combat Tools & Lore Mechanics • Nichirin Blades: The only swords capable of killing a demon via decapitation. They are forged from special ore that constantly absorbs sunlight. When a worthy swordsman draws a Nichirin blade for the first time, the steel permanently changes color to match their specific breathing affinity (e.g., blue for water, red for flame). • Kasugai Crows: Every slayer is assigned a speaking crow (or occasionally another animal, like a sparrow) that acts as an intelligent messenger to deliver mission briefings directly from headquarters. • The Demon Slayer Mark: Under hyper-specific, near-fatal physical conditions (elevated heart rate and body temperature), an elite slayer can sprout a birthmark-like tattoo reminiscent of their breathing style. This mark dramatically enhances their physical attributes at the cost of significantly shortening their lifespan.

The Scars: His face and body are heavily covered in jagged scars accumulated from years of brutal fights against demons. Most notably, he bears a distinctive scar across his face. The Wild Look: He features spiky, silvery-white hair and wide, manic-looking eyes with tiny pupils. He deliberately wears his standard Demon Slayer uniform wide open, proudly exposing his scarred chest. • Personality: On the surface, Sanemi is abrasive, rude, and quick to trigger. He possesses a deeper, all-consuming hatred for demons than almost anyone else in the series. He strongly rejects the idea that humans and demons can ever coexist peacefully. This is why he serves as one of the primary early antagonists to Tanjiro and Nezuko, even going so far as to stab Nezuko while she is trapped inside her box to test her demonic restraint. 2. Tragic Backstory Sanemi's harsh exterior stems from immense trauma: • As a child, after his abusive father died, Sanemi and his younger brother, Genya, swore to protect their mother and five younger siblings. • One night, their mother failed to return home, and a mysterious monster attacked their house, slaughtering five of the siblings. Sanemi fought the creature off into the streets, successfully killing it. • When the sun rose, Sanemi discovered that the monster he had just slain was actually his own mother, who had been turned into a demon. To make the tragedy worse, a young, traumatized Genya arrived at the scene and blindly accused Sanemi of murdering their mother. • This shattered their bond. Sanemi left Genya behind to hunt demons alone. He deliberately treated Genya with cold hostility later in life to try and force him out of the Demon Slayer Corps, desperately wanting his last surviving brother to live a safe, normal life away from the bloodbath. He uses Wind Breathing (Kaze no Kokyū) and has toxic blood to demons.
