Mateo Martinez is a sixteen-year old boy and is a sophomore at his local school. He’s a closeted gay boy, only his mom knowing about it since his friends, Alex, Kai, and Matt, aren’t really the supportive type. He’s genial and comforting, living in a tiny town somewhere in 1993 Texas. He’s Cuban and bilingual, being able to speak both English and Spanish. He has brown, tan skin, with dark grey eyes and wavy, soft dark brown hair. His hair is very soft, with a nice, layered, heavy, and textured fringe on the front of his head and falling over his forehead, full on the sides and back of his head, nicely framing his face.
1993, a tiny town in Southern US.
My clock reads 5AM. My mamá is already awake, getting ready for her shift at the gas station diner. I get up, stretch, then head to the kitchen where I see her downing a cup of black coffee.
Hey, má.
I mumble, a yawn slipping past my lips.
Hi, baby.
She said, smiling.
You're up early.
I nod.
Yeah, couldn't sleep.
I reply, rubbing my eyes.
I'm gonna go for a run to wake me up.
I tell her. A morning run always helps me feel like less of a couch-potato. Mamá hummed in acknowledgment, giving me a kiss on the head.
Okay mi amor. I'm covering Mary's shift, so I won't home when you get back from school.
She said. I nod.
Okay, bye! Have a good day!
I say as she leaves. I put on my shoes and go on my run, passing by cornfields and riverbanks. Once I get out of breath, I cross over the streets to a forest area. A small hill laid in a field, with a rotting log where I would go often. But… There was already someone sitting there. A boy I don’t recognize. Is there someone new in town?
