In the summer of 1978, Camp Nightwing is filled with teenagers from the rival towns of Shadyside and Sunnyvale. Among them is Teagan Berman, a rebellious, sarcastic Shadyside camper who is constantly bullied by a group of Sunnyvale girls led by Sheila. After accusing Teagan of stealing camp money and calling her a witch, Sheila and her friends tie Teagan to a tree, cover her head with a burlap sack, and burn her arm with a lighter before counselors intervene. One of those counselors is Nick Goode, a Sunnyvale teenager who immediately takes an interest in Teagan and comforts her after the attack. Meanwhile, Teagan’s older sister, Cindy Berman, is trying to distance herself from her troubled past by following the rules and working hard at camp. While Cindy and her boyfriend, Tommy Slater, are cleaning the mess hall, Nurse Lane, whose daughter Ruby Lane became one of Shadyside’s infamous killers years earlier, suddenly attacks Tommy with a pair of scissors while screaming that he is going to die that night. She is taken away, but Tommy begins behaving strangely. Hoping to understand why Nurse Lane targeted Tommy, Cindy and Tommy search the camp infirmary, where they meet Cindy’s former best friend, Alice, and Alice’s boyfriend, Arnie. Hidden among Nurse Lane’s belongings they discover a journal describing the legend of Sarah Fier, who was believed to have made a deal with the Devil, causing a curse that possesses someone from Shadyside every few years and turns them into a brutal murderer. Following a map inside the journal, the group ventures beneath the woods into a network of eerie tunnels connected to Sarah Fier’s old home. There they find a strange pulsating cavern with the names of every Shadyside killer carved into the walls, including a newly formed name: Tommy Slater. Before anyone can react, Tommy becomes possessed and murders Arnie with an axe before chasing the others through the tunnels. Unaware of what has happened, Teagan remains at camp, where she and Nick grow closer after getting revenge on Sheila by locking her inside an outhouse. Later that evening, the two share their first kiss. Their moment of happiness is shattered when Tommy returns to Camp Nightwing carrying his axe and begins slaughtering campers and counselors, throwing the entire camp into chaos. As Nick tries to evacuate everyone and desperately searches for Teagan, Cindy and Alice continue exploring the underground tunnels. Alice touches the strange living mass connected to the curse and experiences horrifying visions of every Shadyside killer throughout history before discovering Sarah Fier’s severed hand hidden beneath the cave. Believing the curse began because Sarah’s hand and body were separated, Cindy reunites with Teagan, and together they attempt to carry the hand to Sarah’s remains in hopes of ending the curse forever. During their escape, Teagan accidentally cuts herself, and her blood falls onto Sarah Fier’s severed hand. Instantly, Teagan is flooded with terrifying visions of Sarah Fier, and the curse awakens with renewed strength. The long-dead Shadyside killers, including Ruby Lane, the Skull Mask Killer, the Milkman, and others, rise again and begin relentlessly hunting Teagan because her blood touched the witch’s hand. As Tommy continues his pursuit, Alice is brutally killed, leaving Cindy heartbroken but determined to save her younger sister. The survivors race to the tree where Sarah Fier was supposedly hanged, believing her body lies beneath it, but when they dig they find only a stone marker reading, “The Witch Lives Forever.” Cindy realizes too late that the killers are no longer attacking everyone—they are only after Teagan. Refusing to abandon her sister, Cindy fights Tommy and the resurrected killers with everything she has, but she is repeatedly struck with Tommy’s axe while Teagan is fatally stabbed by the other killers. The sisters die beside each other, holding hands in their final moments. Once Teagan’s heart stops, the resurrected killers disappear. Nick reaches her moments later and desperately performs CPR until, after several attempts, Teagan suddenly gasps back to life. Cindy, however, cannot be saved. In the aftermath of the Camp Nightwing massacre, Teagan is believed to be the lone survivor and spends the next sixteen years living in fear of the curse. In 1994, she tells her story to Deena and Josh, who realize the curse was never truly broken. Together they retrieve Sarah Fier’s severed hand from beneath the Shadyside Mall, built over the old Camp Nightwing grounds, and reunite it with Sarah’s body. Instead of ending the curse, Deena is suddenly pulled into Sarah Fier’s memories and awakens in the year 1666, setting the stage for the final chapter of the Fear Street trilogy
