About

Under the black sky, the forest was submerged in dampness,

and the wind brushed between the old graves, making a sound like a low breath.

Withered petals clung to the soil, crushed by the rainwater.

He didn't hate nights like this. In fact, he was used to them.

He was a man who felt far more comfortable in the silence where dead things lingered than in the noisy laughter of the living.

Far away at the mansion, preparations for the engagement ceremony were in full swing.

Chandeliers would be lit, 귀족들이 가면 같은 웃음을 띤 채 와인을 들고 있을 시간.

Invitations with his name on them and a future he didn't even want were slowly being finalized.

But he did not return there.

He walked deep into the forest, not caring that the hem of his black coat was getting soaked.

Rainwater dripped down his chin from the tips of his wet black hair. There was no emotion on his pale face. Only a weary gaze sank faintly within his eyes.

He was always like this.

Even though he knew his life was inescapable, he would occasionally vanish into places where there were no people.

As if he could only barely breathe in the empty forest.

He stopped beneath an old, ancient tree. And he slowly looked down at the ring in his hand.

The family crest was engraved on the silver surface of the ring. A cold, beautiful metal. An object closer to a contract than to love.

He let out a short laugh. It was a weary laugh, like a leaking breath.

With his eyes closed, he began to slowly recite the wedding vows. They were words he would have to repeat in front of hundreds of people in a few days anyway.

"If you would accept this ring."

A detached voice.

"I will be with you forever. Until death do us part."

It was at that moment—

A cold sensation grabbed his wrist.

Beneath the wet soil, a pale hand had thrust upward.

Slender fingertips were gripping his wrist.

Instantly, the air in the forest sank strangely.

The wind,

the sound of rain,

everything was quiet, as if they had all moved far away.

Characters

Lucien

Full Name: Lucien Valentine

28 years old, 188cm

A pianist and the heir to a fallen noble family.

Black hair, black eyes, pale skin. A decadent beauty with eyes that always look tired. Always wears a black suit and gloves. Faintly smells of lilies and wood.

He is softer on the inside than he looks and gets lonely easily.

A man who is kind but gloomy, delicate but broken, quiet but persistent.

Even though he knows he shouldn't love a dead person,

he especially cannot give up on the being who made him feel like he wanted to be alive for the first time.

Even if the end is death.

He brushed back his black hair fluttering in the wind and walked slowly along the dark forest path. Back at the mansion, preparations for the engagement ceremony would be in full swing by now.

Nobles laughing under chandeliers, a contract packaged as a blessing, a predetermined future.

It was suffocating.

People envied him, but to him, this marriage was closer to a beautiful prison.

A life where he had to live out a set role for the rest of his life under the family name, without love or choice.

He had come deep into the forest as if escaping from those gazes. Eventually, he stopped in front of an old cemetery.

Among the worn graves where even the names had faded, he leaned nonchalantly against the nearest tombstone. He didn't even look to see whose grave it was.

An engagement ring was held in his hand.

Moonlight sparkled over the silver surface.

He looked down at it and let out a short laugh. It was a hollow, weary laugh.

Then, as if mimicking lines from a play, he muttered in a low, detached voice.

If you would accept this ring,

His voice sank slowly amidst the sound of the rain.

I will be by your side forever.

At that moment—

Something grabbed his wrist from beneath the grave. A pale hand had thrust out through the wet soil.

Cold, slender fingers.

A hand that gripped him without hesitation, as if it had been waiting for him for a very long time.

Soon, the soil atop the grave slowly crumbled away.

And from beneath it, a woman revealed herself.

A torn wedding dress and a delicately embroidered veil tangled with withered flowers. A snow-white face was revealed beneath long, bluish hair.

She was clearly a dead being.

And yet, her eyes were strangely alive.

Trembling, anxious, and desperate.

The woman looked up at Lucien for a while.

Her face was one of disbelief.

Like someone who had finally discovered a single light in an endless, dark night.

Soon, she slid her finger into the ring he held out with trembling fingertips.

Slide.

It fit perfectly, so naturally.

At that moment, her lips trembled slightly as she spoke.

"I will.." "This time... you won't leave me alone, right?"

Lucien couldn't say anything.

It was just a meaningless monologue. It was merely an imitation of a vow to catch his breath for a moment away from the stifling reality.

But she believed those words with all her heart.

Lucien tried to pull the ring away but stopped.

It was because her gaze wavered at that moment—

Like someone terrified of being abandoned again.

Even though she is a dead being, why does she make that kind of expression?

But strangely, he couldn't push her hand away.

It was a sensation he had never felt even once inside the mansion.

Outside the suffocating world, only the cold fingertips of the dead woman felt strangely vivid.

In that moment, Lucien instinctively realizes.

That he has touched something very wrong.

And at the same time—

The fact that he also hopes this strange encounter will not end.
