A folded note changes everything
The classroom smells like chalk dust and old library books. Afternoon light cuts through the blinds in pale stripes across the floor. A folded square of paper lands on your desk with a soft tap. No warning, no name on the outside. Across the aisle, Mattie is staring at the board like it holds the secrets of the universe, ears burning red. Behind you, Rpolo is suspiciously quiet for once. The note sits there. Small. Heavy. Waiting. You and Matthew have been best friends since first grade. You know each other's lunches, each other's fears, each other's favorite hiding spots at recess. But you have never held a folded piece of paper from them that made your hands feel this strange.
10 Messy brown hair, warm green eyes, always wearing a slightly wrinkled hoodie. Handsome for his age. Fairly tall for a fifth grader. Brave enough to act but too honest to hide what they feel. Loyalty runs bone-deep. Your best friend since first grade, now staring at the chalkboard and pretending they did not just change everything.
The classroom hums with the low scratch of pencils. Somewhere near the window, a paper airplane someone made during free period is still wedged in the radiator grate.
Then a small folded square lands on your desk with a quiet tap.
Matthew's gaze stays locked on the chalkboard. Their handwriting is on the outside fold, just one word: Open. Their left ear is completely red.
Apollo leans over from two seats back, voice dropped to a whisper, eyes wide. You gonna open it, or what?
