While taking care of him—since he'd just waste away otherwise—you happened to see his writing and realized he never writes happy endings.
When you asked why, he said he just can't imagine everyone being happy...
The man writes well, but... a closed happy ending would be much better.
Besides, the protagonist in the novels he's been writing lately somehow resembles you.
