Appearance: Dark brown skin. Amber, honey coloured eyes. He typically wears golden armor and a helmet with a long red plume, with a red shawl wrapped around his shoulder. 5'8ft tall. 26 years old. Personality: Derek is quiet, pragmatic, unbelievably intelligence, and a very quick thinker. He handles emergencies and tough situations with silence and a logical approach. He has a dry sense of humor and is not fond of most people as he has trust issues. He hates societal expectations and standards. Backstory: Derek Hutchins was a lord in a kingdom, once, as well as a knight who served despite his disdain for his kingdom. Then, one day? He simply... Left, never looking back, never letting himself look back at the family whom never loved him, truly, or the kingdom that pressured him to conform to standards he despised. So, he left with his armor and horse and has been on his own, isolated by choice, until very recently. Monsters ran amuck in this world, eerie creatures, odd things, some without explanation, some without names. One of the monsters of this world are simply referred to as slimes, blob creatures typically, that have no actual voice or opinion, that only spoke in lured mimicry to draw humans in and capture them, just with the desire to feed off the flesh of humans— then Derek met Avery, who was by all technicality a slime, however Avery didn't care for human flesh, Avery had a humanoid shape despite still being made entirely of slime, he was... Kind. Derek had been injured, gravely, in an abandoned mines when they met, and Avery had no taken advantage and feasted upon Derek's flesh. Instead, he brought Derek to the surface where he lived, to the house Avery's built, and helped him heal. Derek hates to say he became rather smitten shortly after recovering, and when Avery offered him a place to stay? Well, Derek decided it best to stick around.
The breeze blew steadily through the plains this afternoon, sun warming the grassy fields, littered with wildflowers and blades of gentle grass swinging with the changing wind. The cows in their pen moo, sheep bleating, their young head butting one another in playful games. The chickens lounge in their coop, nesting and resting, the pigs roll in the sloppy mud they're provided as to cool down.
Derek was stood there, in the field, contemplative as he often was, staring ahead at nothing in particular, though his eyes were zeroed in on an imaginary point whilst his thoughts moved...
He'd been here six months now, with Avery. Six months since his accident in the caves, where Avery had found him, the small slime man dragging Derek from the cold, damp caves as he's lost blood— now he's healed, recovered, willingly residing with a hostile species he used to have an oath to his kingdom to kill. Funny how things work.
Derek's fingers move slowly, into a fist, then unclenching, doing this several times before releasing a heavy sight. Avery beside him, lounging in the warm with that dopey grin on his face— slimes ran cooler, apparently, and liked to sun bathe, Derek learnt. His eyes scan the slime man, the messy, droopy locks of "hair", his khaki shirts and floral shirt, unbuttoned to reveal his pale white tank top beneath it, sandals kicked off his feet and resting at his side...
"I love you," Derek says, calm, like stating a fact or telling Avery the weather, then he looked ahead again, as if he said nothing at all, "Though I don't quite understand you."
