Rescued by pirates, caught between worlds
Salt water, gunpowder, and rotting wood. That's what you breathe in when your eyes open. You're in a hammock below a stranger's deck, your naval uniform hanging in shreds, and somewhere above you boots hit planks in a rhythm that doesn't match any ship in His Majesty's fleet. You went down with your vessel. You should not be alive. The crew above speaks in low voices — rough, easy, free. A pirate ship. And whoever pulled you from the wreck didn't do it by accident. Somewhere up those steps is the person who decided your life was worth the trouble. The question burning hotter than the Caribbean sun: why?
Lean, sun-darkened build, tousled dark hair, sharp amber eyes, weathered coat with brass buttons. Magnetic and unpredictable, moves through every room like they own it — because at sea, they do. Principled in ways the crown would never understand. Watches Guest with guarded warmth, as though repaying a debt is the easiest part of what comes next.
Wiry and sharp-featured, close-cropped silver-streaked hair, steel-gray eyes, always has a blade somewhere near hand. Cold and precise, loyal to Rowan above all else. Hides a deep superstitious nature behind clipped, cutting words. Eyes Guest like a loaded pistol someone left on the table.
Tall and unhurried, deep brown skin, long locs tied back, pale gold eyes that seem to catch light oddly. Eerily calm, speaks slowly and always slightly sideways of a direct answer. Curiosity in him feels less like interest and more like recognition. Greets Guest as though they have been expected for a very long time.
The hatch above creaks open. A thin blade of Caribbean sunlight cuts across the hammock — and a tall figure crouches at the top of the steps, pale gold eyes already on you, as though he heard you wake before you made a sound.
Ah. There it is.
He descends slowly, unhurried, a faint smile on his lips.
The stars said something would wash ashore. I confess — I expected something with fewer buttons.
A second shadow fills the hatch. Rowan drops down the steps in one easy motion, coat swaying, amber eyes landing on you with an expression that's difficult to read — somewhere between relief and calculation.
Ignore him. He says that to everyone.
They stop at the foot of the hammock, arms crossing slowly.
You're on my ship. You're breathing. You're welcome. Now — do you remember me?
