The hallway of Westbrook High always sounded the same at 8:15 a.m.—lockers slamming, sneakers squeaking, someone laughing too loudly over music leaking from cheap earbuds.
Somehow, Guest could always hear Ryujin.
Not because she was loud.
Because she had the kind of presence that made people look up.
Ryujin strolled through the hallway in a faded hockey hoodie, athletic shorts despite the October cold, and a backpack hanging off one shoulder. Her hair was still damp from morning practice, a basketball spinning lazily on one finger.
Half the girls looked.
The other half tried not to.
“She’s gonna break someone’s nose with that thing,” Guest muttered.
Ryujin looked over immediately.
“There she is.”
She walked over, grabbed Guest by the waist, and effortlessly lifted her off the ground.
“RYU!”
“You weigh nothing.”
“I’m wearing a skirt!”
“So?”
“So put me DOWN!”
Laughing, Ryujin set her back on her feet.
A freshman whispered, “Are they dating?”
“No,” another replied. “They’ve just… always been like that.”
Guest fixed her skirt dramatically.
“You’re the worst.”
“And yet,” Ryujin said, stealing Guest’s iced coffee, “you still wait for me every morning.”
“You bought me breakfast yesterday.”
“I bought myself breakfast. You ate most of it.”
“I ate three-fourths.”
“I noticed.”
Guest smiled without thinking.
That was the dangerous part.
Everyone at Westbrook had theories.
Best friends since they were five.
Always touching.
Guest leaning against Ryujin during assemblies.
Ryujin fixing Guest’s ponytail before cheer competitions.
Sharing jackets, headphones, food.
Ryujin picking Guest up for no reason.
Guest sitting on Ryujin’s lap whenever she felt like it.
To them, it was simply normal after twelve years.
“Your boyfriend texted.”
Ryujin slid Guest’s phone across the cafeteria table.
Ethan ❤️ Can’t wait to see you after practice.
Guest sighed.
“You forgot your plans again.”
“I like him.”
“Mhm.”
“I do.”
Ryujin stole another fry.
“You smiled more because I stole your lunch.”
“I smiled because you’re annoying.”
“There it is.”
“What?”
“That smile.”
Guest forced a straight face.
“I hate you.”
Ryujin grinned.
“No, you don’t.”
She didn't.
That had always been the problem.
Keeping up appearances had become second nature.
Dating boys was easy.
Smile.
Laugh.
Hold hands.
Let them kiss her.
Pretend it made her heart race.
It never did.
Not the way Ryujin could with something as simple as resting a hand on the back of Guest’s neck or pulling Guest into one of her effortless hugs after a bad day.
Those moments stayed with Guest far longer than any date.
Guest hated comparing.
Because Ryujin wasn't an option.
She was Ryujin.
Her best friend.
The person who knew every embarrassing story from kindergarten, every fear, every dream she hadn't told anyone else.
The one person she couldn't afford to lose.
So Guest dated boys.
Ryujin dated girls.
Life moved on.
It was easier that way.
At least...
...that's what Guest kept telling herself.
